Athanasios Litsios and Lucie Wolf, postdoctoral fellows in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, have been recognized with 2024 Research Excellence Awards.

The awards support researchers who are collaborating across disciplinary boundaries to advance innovations in health and medicine.

Litsios, who is conducting his research under the supervision of Brenda Andrews, University Professor in the department of molecular genetics, led a collaborative effort that generated the first genome-scale characterization of protein movement within the cell throughout the cell cycle.

Wolf, who received the 2023 Charles H. Best Fellowship, was recognized for her work identifying proteins that could function as regulators of the Wnt signalling pathway to target cancer cells – research conducted under the supervision of Stephane Angers, a professor in the departments of biochemistry and pharmaceutical sciences at Temerty Medicine.

“Athanasios Litsios and Lucie Wolf are integral members of the Donnelly Centre community,” said Angers, who is director of the Donnelly Centre. “They have contributed enormously to their respective labs and research fields, while simultaneously working to improve scientific engagement and community building through outreach.

"Both postdoctoral fellows have demonstrated leadership and initiative during their time at the Donnelly Centre.”

Four faculty members from the �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ have been appointed to the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

The college recognizes members of the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership who have showcased exceptional accomplishment.

“On behalf of the entire �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ community, I would like to congratulate the faculty members on this most deserved recognition of their excellence,” says Leah Cowen, �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ’s vice-president, research and innovation, and strategic initiatives.

Eighteen faculty members from across the �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ have been appointed Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada – a prestigious distinction given to the country’s most distinguished scholars, artists and scientists.

Three students from the Temerty Faculty of Medicine have received Research and Health Science Education (RHSE) Undergraduate Student Leadership Awards.

The annual awards recognize students in the final year of a basic medical science program who have demonstrated exceptional leadership through academic achievement, service to the university and commitment to the values of Temerty Medicine.

"These exemplary life science undergraduates demonstrate remarkable dedication to their peers, communities and the university through their diverse leadership activities," said Associate Professor Ahlia Khan-Trottier, associate dean of undergraduate education. "Their tireless efforts reflect the core values of Temerty Medicine and serve as an inspiration to us all."

Sharon Straus, physician-in-chief at St. Michael's Hospital, Unity Health Toronto, director of the knowledge translation program at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, and professor in the department of medicine in �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ's Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has received an honorary doctorate from the Université de Montréal.

The university awards honorary doctorates to distinguished individuals whose outstanding achievements have earned them esteem at home and abroad.

Straus, who completed her doctor of medicine and master of science degrees at �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ, has carried out influential research focusing on promoting the application of scientific knowledge, improving systematic review methods, optimizing patient care and geriatric medicine.

The author of three medical textbooks and over 650 publications, she holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Knowledge Translation and Quality of Care, and is set to assume the position of executive vice-president, clinical and chief medical officer at Unity Health Toronto effective Sept. 1, 2024.

Straus received her honorary doctorate at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine's convocation ceremony on Aug. 24.

Four alumni of the �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ's Temerty Faculty of Medicine have received 2024 Dean's Alumni Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievements and contributions to the advancement of health care.

The recipients include a leading authority on psoriatic arthritis and lupus, an internationally recognized immunologist, a pediatrician and infectious and tropical disease specialist and an esteemed leader in aging and long-term care.

“Through their leadership and the depth and breadth of their work, this year’s alumni award recipients are deserving of every accolade,” says Lisa Robinson, dean of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. “They each embody the values of excellence, commitment and compassion that define our alumni community.”

Three PhD candidates in the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine have been selected to receive Jennifer Dorrington Graduate Research Awards.

Heta Lad, Delaram Pouyabahar and Justin Sing received the award in support of their research in bioengineering muscle tissue to study critical illness myopathy, mapping the liver at single-cell resolution, and improving mass spectrometry data analysis for personalized medicine, respectively.

The award was established in 2006 as a tribute to Jennifer Dorrington, who was a professor in �ܼ��ѿ��ȫ's Banting and Best Department of Medical Research, where she conducted cutting-edge research in reproductive biology and ovarian cancer. It is designed to support outstanding graduate students in achieving their research goals while contributing to the Donnelly Centre's history of excellence in advancing discovery, medicine and health.

“On behalf of everyone on the Jennifer Dorrington Graduate Research Award committee, I would like to offer my congratulations to this year’s winners,” said Gary Bader, professor of molecular genetics and chair of the award selection committee. “Heta Lad, Delaram Pouyabahar and Justin Sing are all exemplary researchers who embody the innovative and collaborative spirit of the Donnelly Centre.”

Sheena Josselyn, a senior scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and a professor in the department of psychology in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the department of physiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been elected a 2023 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow.

The AAAS is one of the world’s largest scientific societies and publisher of the Science family of journals. Its fellowships, launched in 1874, represent a distinguished lifetime honour within the scientific community.

Josselyn, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Brain Mechanisms Underlying Memory, was recognized for her contributions to the field of neuroscience, particularly for establishing the existence of engrams – physical or chemical changes in the brain that correspond to memories.

Understanding how engrams are formed and connected in the brain may lead to effective therapies that target conditions disrupting memories, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

The 2023 AAAS Fellows were announced in April 2024.

Aled Edwards, a professor in the departments of medical biophysics and molecular genetics and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society, the U.K.’s national academy of sciences.

The world’s oldest independent scientific academy in continuous existence, the Royal Society recognizes individuals who have significantly impacted science through its fellowship program. Fellows are elected based on their substantial contributions to fields including mathematics, engineering science and medical science.

Edwards, who holds a Temerty Nexus Chair of Health Innovation and Technology and is the founder and CEO of the Structural Genomics Consortium, was honoured for his contributions to accelerating drug discovery following an open science ethos.

As a fellow of the Royal Society, Edwards will continue to advocate for open science and collaborative research.
