They are involved in many biological processes that are of keen interest to researchers who are developing therapeutics.

鈥淲e haven鈥檛 been able to model the full range of conformations for peptides until now,鈥 said Osama Abdin, first author on the study and recent PhD graduate of molecular genetics at 管家婆免费开奖大全鈥檚 Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. 鈥淧epFlow leverages deep-learning to capture the precise and accurate conformations of a peptide within minutes.

鈥淭here鈥檚 potential with this model to inform drug development through the design of peptides that act as binders.鈥

The study was recently published in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence.

A peptide鈥檚 role in the human body is directly linked to how it folds since its 3D structure determines the way it binds and interacts with other molecules.

鈥淧eptides were the focus of the PepFlow model because they are very important biological molecules and they are naturally very dynamic, so we need to model their different conformations to understand their function,鈥 said Philip M. Kim, the study鈥檚 principal investigator and a professor at the Donnelly Centre. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e also important as therapeutics, as can be seen by the GLP1 analogues, like Ozempic, used to treat diabetes and obesity.鈥

Peptides are also cheaper to produce than their larger protein counterparts, said Kim, who is also a professor of computer science in 管家婆免费开奖大全鈥檚 Faculty of Arts & Science and a professor of molecular genetics in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine.

The new model expands on the capabilities of AlphaFold, the leading Google DeepMind AI system for predicting protein structure. It does this by generating a range of conformations for a given peptide. Taking inspiration from highly advanced physics-based machine learning models, PepFlow can also model peptide structures that take on unusual formations, including the ring-like structure that results from a process called macrocyclization. Peptide macrocycles are currently a highly promising venue for drug development.

鈥淚t took two-and-a-half years to develop PepFlow and one month to train it, but it was worthwhile to move to the next frontier beyond models that only predict one structure of a peptide,鈥 Abdin said.

There are, however, limitations given that PepFlow represents the first version of a new model. The study authors noted a number of ways in which PepFlow could be improved, including training the model with explicit data for solvent atoms, which would dissolve the peptides to form a solution, and for constraints on the distance between atoms in ring-like structures.

Yet, even as a first version, the researchers say PepFlow is a comprehensive and efficient model with potential for furthering the development of treatments that depend on peptide binding to activate or inhibit biological processes.

鈥淢odelling with PepFlow offers insight into the real energy landscape of peptides,鈥 said Abdin.

The research was supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 15 Aug 2024 12:54:41 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 309000 at Learning rewired: 管家婆免费开奖大全 researcher sparks kids鈥 interest in tech with animatronic critters /news/learning-rewired-u-t-researcher-sparks-kids-interest-tech-animatronic-critters Learning rewired: 管家婆免费开奖大全 researcher sparks kids鈥 interest in tech with animatronic critters

bresgead Tue, 07/16/2024 - 14:22

Cutline

Paul Dietz, a distinguished engineer in residence and director of fabrication in 管家婆免费开奖大全鈥檚 computer science department, hopes his paper animatronic creations can engage more kids in STEM through the power of storytelling (photo by Polina Teif)

Adina Bresge

Topic

Our Community

Computer Science

Education

Faculty of Arts & Science

Ontario Institute for Studies in Education

Robotics

STEM

Subheadline

Paul Dietz says robotic paper creations are a creative 鈥 and more inclusive 鈥 way to get kids interested in STEM fields

Could a talking paper octopus be the key to igniting kids' curiosity about technology?

管家婆免费开奖大全 engineer Paul Dietz certainly thinks so. The goal, he says, is to teach kids to use technology as a tool for storytelling, dismantling what he sees as a false divide between the arts and sciences.

鈥淥ne of the first participants in this program was a young girl who was really into writing creative stories and really loved science. And she saw these as two conflicting parts of her world,鈥 says Dietz, who is also a faculty affiliate at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society.

鈥淎fter what she did in animatronics, it suddenly dawned on her that you can do both. He believes a well-rounded education should equip students with a diverse arsenal of tools to explore new ideas.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e an artist, you have to learn the mechanics of sculpting or painting or whatever your medium is,鈥 he says. 鈥淲e should be looking at engineering and technology as those tools, and the key is 鈥 learning how to use them creatively to achieve things that are actually positive for our society.鈥

The universal appeal of storytelling also serves to make technology accessible and exciting to kids of all ages and genders, Dietz adds.

Bridging the gender divide in STEM has been core to Dietz鈥檚 animatronics mission since its inception.

When his daughter was in middle school, Dietz took her to a robotics competition 鈥 but she was turned off by the contest, which seemed pointless to her. However, when the two of them worked together on an animatronic raccoon, he saw her passion for creating ignite.

鈥淭his light bulb went off in my head: Maybe the problem isn鈥檛 that we鈥檙e doing keynotes and exhibits 鈥 so it was no surprise that 管家婆免费开奖大全鈥檚 AI luminaries were front and centre.

They included 管家婆免费开奖大全 alumnus Aidan Gomez, co-founder of language processing startup Cohere 鈥 which has raised hundreds of millions from investors and generated significant industry buzz.

He urged businesses to commit to adopting AI tools to support their workers.

鈥淢aking sure that you鈥檙e delivering the tools that your employees need to be competitive and effective is crucial,鈥 Gomez said during his talk on Tuesday.

He added that augmentation of workforces with AI co-pilots and assistants is inevitable 鈥 including in industries that might not stand out as obvious adopters of the technology. He shared the example of a natural resources insurance firm that built an AI co-pilot 鈥 powered by Cohere 鈥 to help their actuaries speed up their research, craft more accurate bids and win more contracts.

鈥淚 never would have thought a natural resources insurance company would be adopting LLMs [large language models], but they are, and it鈥檚 having an impact. It鈥檚 actually helping them win more business,鈥 Gomez said. 鈥淪o I think the technology is completely horizontal.鈥

Gomez also cited the medical sector 鈥 particularly, drug discovery 鈥 as another area that鈥檚 poised to benefit massively from AI advances.

Aidan Gomez, a 管家婆免费开奖大全 alumnus, talked about how AI will be used to augment the workforce (photo by Polina Teif)

University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton, the influential computer scientist often dubbed the 鈥済odfather of AI,鈥 also identified medical care and productivity as two key areas that will see significant improvements thanks to AI. That includes grappling with issues such as AI safety, data privacy and misinformation.

Program co-creator Sheila McIlraith, a professor in the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and an associate director at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (SRI), says E3I aims to help students 鈥渞ecognize the broader ramifications of the technology they鈥檙e developing on diverse stakeholders, and to avoid or mitigate any negative impact.鈥

First launched in 2020 as a two-year pilot program, the initiative is a collaborative venture between the department of computer science and SRI in association with the department of philosophy. It integrates ethics modules into select undergraduate computer science courses 鈥 and has reached thousands of 管家婆免费开奖大全 students in this academic year alone.

Malaikah Hussain is one of the many 管家婆免费开奖大全 students who has benefited from the initiative. As a first-year student enrolled in CSC111: Foundations of Computer Science II, she participated in an E3I module that explored how a data structure she learned about in class laid the foundation of a contact tracing system and raised ethical issues concerning data collection.

鈥淭he modules underlined how the software design choices we make extend beyond computing efficiency concerns to grave ethical concerns such as privacy,鈥 says Hussain, who is now a third-year computer science specialist.

Hussain adds that the modules propelled her interest in ethics and computing, leading her to pursue upper year courses on the topic. During a subsequent internship, she organized an event about the ethics surrounding e-waste disposal and the company鈥檚 technology life cycle.

鈥淭he E3I modules have been crucial in shaping my approach to my studies and work, emphasizing the importance of ethics in every aspect of computing,鈥 she says.

The program, which initially reached 400 students, has seen significant growth over the last four years. This academic year alone, total enrolment in computer science courses with E3I programming has exceeded 8,000 students. Another 1,500 students participated in E3I programming in courses outside computer science.

Clockwise from top left: Steven Coyne, Diane Horton, David Liu and Sheila McIlraith (supplied images)

In recognition of the program鈥檚 impact on the undergraduate student learning experience, McIlraith and her colleagues 鈥 Diane Horton and David Liu, a professor and associate professor, teaching stream, respectively, in the department of computer science, and Steven Coyne, an assistant professor who is jointly appointed to the departments of computer science and philosophy 鈥 were recently recognized with the 2024 Northrop Frye Award (Team), one of the prestigious 管家婆免费开奖大全 Alumni Association Awards of Excellence.

Horton, who leads the initiative鈥檚 assessment efforts, points to the team鈥檚 recently published paper showing that after participating in modules in only one or two courses, students are inspired to learn more about ethics and are benefiting in the workplace.

鈥淲e have evidence that they are better able to identify ethical issues arising in their work, and that the modules help them navigate those issues,鈥 she says.

Horton adds that the findings build on earlier assessment work showing that after experiencing modules in only one course, students became more interested in ethics and tech, and more confident in their ability to deal with ethical issues they might encounter.

The team says the initiative鈥檚 interdisciplinary nature is key to delivering both a curriculum and experience with an authentic voice, giving instructors and students the vocabulary and depth of knowledge to engage on issues such as privacy, well-being and harm.

鈥淎s a philosopher and ethicist, I love teaching in a computer science department,鈥 says Coyne. 鈥淢y colleagues teach me about interesting ethical problems that they鈥檝e found in their class material, and I get to reciprocate by finding distinctions and ideas that illuminate those problems. And we learn a lot from each other 鈥 intellectually and pedagogically 鈥 when we design a module for that class together.鈥

E3I is founded upon three key principles: teach students how 鈥 not what 鈥 to think; encourage ethics-informed design choices as a design principle; and make discussions safe, not personal.

鈥淓ngaging with students and making them feel safe, not proselytizing, inviting the students to participate is especially important,鈥 says Liu.

The modules support this type of learning environment by using stakeholders with fictional character profiles that include names, pictures and a backstory.

鈥淔ictional stakeholders help add a layer of distance so students can think through the issues without having to say, 鈥楾his is what I think,鈥欌 Horton says. 鈥淪takeholders also increase their awareness of the different kinds of people who might be impacted.鈥

McIlraith adds that having students advocate for an opinion that is not necessarily their own encourages empathy, while Liu notes that many have a 鈥渞eal hunger鈥 to learn about the ethical considerations of their work.

鈥淎n increasing number of students are thinking, 鈥業 want to be trained as a computer scientist and I want to use my skills after graduation,鈥 but also 鈥業 want to do something that I think will make a positive impact on the world,鈥欌 he says.

Together, the E3I team works with course instructors to develop educational modules that tightly pair ethical concepts with course-specific technical material. In an applied software design course, for example, students learn about accessible software and disability theory; in a theoretical algorithms course, they learn about algorithmic fairness and distributive justice; and in a game design course, they learn about addiction and consent.

Steve Engels, a computer science professor, teaching stream, says integrating an ethics module about addiction into his fourth-year capstone course on video game design felt like a natural extension of his lecture topic on ludology 鈥 in particular, the psychological techniques used to make games compelling 鈥 instead of something that felt artificially inserted into the course.

鈥淧roject-based courses can sometimes compel students to focus primarily on the final product of the course, but this module provided an opportunity to pause and reflect on what they were doing and why,鈥 Engels says. 鈥淚t forced them to confront their role in the important and current issue of gaming addiction, so they would be more aware of the ethical implications of their future work and thus be better equipped to handle it.鈥

By next year, each undergraduate computer science student will encounter E3I modules in at least one or two courses every year throughout their program. The team is also exploring the adoption of the E3I model in other STEM disciplines, from ecology to statistics. Beyond 管家婆免费开奖大全, the team plans to share their expertise with other Canadian universities that are interested in developing a similar program.

鈥淭his initiative is having a huge impact,鈥 McIlraith says. 鈥淵ou see it in the number of students we鈥檙e reaching and in our assessment results. But it鈥檚 more than that 鈥 we鈥檙e instigating a culture change.鈥

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 26 Apr 2024 19:22:07 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307643 at What Now? What鈥檚 your take on how AI is evolving?

Over the next decade, virtually every bit of software will be replaced by artificial intelligence or embedded with it. The implications for our world and the global economy are profound.

Traditional software is hard-coded and static. Once shipped and deployed, it never improves until the next version is shipped and replaces it. Soon, all software will be powered by AI that learns and improves, often in real-time. Built around learning algorithms that adapt to new situations, AI software is more efficient and effective. This is particularly true for generative AI, which can create new data or software code on its own, without the need for human input.

This coming software replacement cycle will have an extraordinary impact on our economy. In addition, AI will help unlock new discoveries across science. These are Industrial Revolution-sized opportunities 鈥 happening simultaneously and enabled by one technology.

One of my personal motivations for starting Radical was to invest in companies that would help solve the biggest challenges facing humanity. When we were thinking of selling our AI company, Layer 6, to focus on building the leading AI investment firm, I said to my Radical co-founder and 管家婆免费开奖大全 alum, Tomi Poutanen: 鈥淎I will help cure cancers. Let鈥檚 help cure cancer.鈥

How would you describe venture capital鈥檚 role when it comes to responsible AI development?

Venture capital is an essential driver of economic value and innovation. Only half of one per cent of public companies received venture funding, but VC-backed companies account for 40 per cent of total U.S. market capitalization. VC plays a disproportionate role in the economy, especially when it comes to the development of new technologies such as AI. OpenAI, Cohere and the startups behind the large language models that helped bring AI to the mainstream over the past year received multiple rounds of funding from venture capital firms. Google and Meta 鈥 whose industrial labs created some of the biggest AI breakthroughs of the last decade 鈥 were, at one time, fuelled by venture capital.

At Radical, we are committed to developing AI technologies and applications that improve the future for all, and we believe that the venture capital industry 鈥 the underwriters of tomorrow鈥檚 innovations 鈥 must approach investments in AI with a sense of shared responsibility. Last year, in partnership with the Vector Institute, we launched the Responsible AI for Startups (RAIS) framework 鈥 an open-source resource for investors evaluating investments in AI technologies. RAIS is a practical tool to help VCs assess early-stage AI companies and technologies across responsibility and safety considerations.

Let's talk about Cohere, a startup that has numerous 管家婆免费开奖大全 ties and several high-profile backers, including yourself. How is it different from other companies developing large language models?

Cohere is one of a cohort of companies, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, that is developing the world鈥檚 most sophisticated large language models. Unlike most competitors in the space, Cohere鈥檚 focus is offering a cloud-agnostic, privacy-preserving solution for enterprise customers, which include Oracle and McKinsey.

Cohere鈥檚 founders are three Canadian entrepreneurs [and former 管家婆免费开奖大全 computer science students]: Aidan Gomez, the company鈥檚 CEO and one of the authors of the groundbreaking transformers paper that ushered in the era of modern generative AI; Nick Frosst, protege of deep learning pioneer and [University Professor Emeritus] Geoffrey Hinton, and their classmate Ivan Zhang. Today, the team includes many of the inventors of some of the most widely used modern AI techniques.

How would you describe Cohere's growth to date 鈥 and where do you see it heading in the future?

Radical was deeply engaged with Cohere prior to company incorporation and invested the very first cheque into the company in 2019. Since then, Cohere has developed world-class language models that compete directly with the best models in the world, grown the team to more than 200 people across offices in Toronto, San Francisco, New York City and London, and signed many global enterprises as customers. It is now one of the most valuable AI companies in the world. Given the technical complexities of working with cutting-edge AI models, there are few companies that have the experience and expertise to push the field forward while also delivering huge value to industry. Cohere leads the pack.

What advice would you give researchers or students who are keen on building a company in the AI space?

Tackle the most important problems. Building a business aimed at making incremental advances on existing technologies may find a market in the near-term. However, in the long run, these businesses are vulnerable to competition or commodification by existing AI solutions. Whether it鈥檚 tackling climate change, increasing business productivity or curing cancer, AI is a technology capable of taking on many of the world鈥檚 biggest challenges.

It鈥檚 also important to remember that we are still in the very early innings of the AI revolution. The field will continue to evolve and change. There鈥檚 a very real opportunity right now for young entrepreneurs to shape the future of this important technology.

News home page banner

Off

Thu, 04 Apr 2024 22:39:50 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 307215 at
